Cancers, heart disease, adult on set diabetes and other common illness are not exactly hereditary. This means that the mutation that takes place to create diseases did not have to happen at conception and were not necessarily passed onto you. The mutations that cause most disease happens after conception and therefore are not truly Hereditary. Meaning it was not passed on as a bad gene to you and you get it no matter what.
A mutated gene must be present for disease to occur and there are family histories of diseases that can be statistically linked. What this means is that your family has similar factors that are causing the genes to mutate. It does not mean that you will get the disease because your Mother or Father had it.
What causes genes to mutate ? That is the million-dollar question. It seams that a number of factors play a role. Chief among them would be environmental exposures. If a substance enters a body that is known to cause a gene to mutate, there is a high chance it will do so if it enters your body. Greater exposure equals greater chance for illness or cell mutations to occur.
The second factor is your individual immune response to those environmental factors. Meaning, how does your body do the job of attacking and eliminating dangerous environmental toxins that enter the body. The greater the immune response, the less likely cell will mutate and illness will develop.
What are factors that contribute to a compromised immune system? The number one factor is stress.
Stress creates chemicals within the body that restrict the immune function. Chemicals like cortisol, GH and norepinephrine are released at periods of high stress. Other chemicals like melatonin, serotonin, dopamine are all stress reducers. They help the cell stay healthy. Still other chemicals act as anti mutation chemicals that kill free radicals. These chemicals really help the cell stay healthy by washing or cleaning away the free radicals that can mutate a cell and cause disease.

Qigong and Tai Chi both increase those types of chemicals, particularly
SOD (Superoxide Dismutases ).
One experiment “showed that the mean level of SOD was increased by qigong exercise. For example, the SOD level was larger in the qigong group (about 2700 µ/g Hb) and than in the control group (1700 µ/g Hb), and this difference was significant “.

Two additional studies from researchers at the University of Kebangsaan in Malaysia suggest that practicing tai chi leads to reductions in damage to DNA. The first study which compared 35 adults over the age of 45 who had practiced tai chi at least 7 years to 35 non tai chi sedentary control individuals. The individuals who practiced tai chi had higher levels of normal DNA and lower levels of mild and severely damaged DNA compared to the controls. From:

In a separate study, researchers at the same University followed a group of tai chi participants and matched sedentary controls over the course of a year. They found that after 12 months the sedentary controls had decreased normal DNA and increased severely damaged DNA compared to the tai chi group.

According to researchers at the National Cancer Institute in Bethesda MD, physical activity has been shown in epidemiological reviews to reduce cancer risk. While the reasons for this reduced risk have not been established, improved DNA repair mechanisms is one of the beneficial effects in increased physical activity that may contribute to the reduced risk.
